Ben Lasky adopted the gibberish moniker Quadeca during preschool recess in an attempt to name his imaginary superhero alter-ego. Concept albums like 2022's I Didn't Mean to Haunt You and 2024's genre-blurring SCRAPYARD built him a devoted, obsessive fanbase and over half a billion streams and views, alongside a parallel career as a collaborator and producer for artists including Danny Brown and Kevin Abstract. In 2025, he expanded that world-building to its grandest scale yet with Vanisher, Horizon Scraper, a sailor-themed concept album that became his most successful era to date, both critically and commercially, debuting at #1 on Billboard's Alternative Albums chart and landing as the #1 highest-rated album of 2025 on Album of the Year.
Now, after Vanisher's mythic scale, Quadeca is turning immediate and personal with Life 1, introduced by singles "Dark Magic" (May 27, 2026) and "Baby Steps" (June 23, 2026). Where Vanisher reached for transcendence, Life 1 is direct: jarring, absurd, and emotionally unguarded. It moves through grief, love, heartbreak and growing up, favoring instinct and rawness over polish: odd stock keyboard tones, warped textures, unexpected structures, hooks that are as playful as they are disarming. At its core, Life 1 treats existence as a mere first draft. It plays with nihilism approached not out of bitterness but out of love and curiosity for what it means to be alive. Self-described as both his debut and finale, Quadeca's newest move is toward one that's unmistakably, imperfectly human.
